Description
Sweet violet has been cultivated for over 2000 years. In Provence, in Tourrettes-sur-Loup, a cultivar of the Sweet Violet, the Victoria Violet, is cultivated for the Grasse perfume industry for its distinctive fragrance. Contrary to what one might think, it is the leaves, not the flowers, that are used. It was particularly popular during the Victorian period.
This plant spreads by long rooting runners.

Flowers are dark violet or white with a short upturned spur. The 2 lateral petals are bearded.
