Description

A hairy plant with stems radiating from the crown, prostrate, or climbing if it finds support.

A native to southern Europe. It thrives on poor soils and in dry habitats, where it can form large, flat patches.

Flowers

The tiny flowers are solitary, 5 petals, 5 sepals with 10 stamens.

Leaves

Pinnate row of leaflets on either side of the stem. 5-6 pairs of hairy leaflets on either side of the stem, 3 mm long.

Fruits Seeds

Bur: 5 spiked seeds, sharp enough to puncture a bicycle tyre, painful if stepped upon, 8-10 mm.

Medical

Roots and fruit: used in Ayurveda (Indian Medicine). A herb that is reputed to promote male virility and general vitality, to protect organ functions, especially of the liver and kidneys.
