Description

A slow growing tree or shrub, mostly branched from below.

All parts of the Yew contain the poisonous alkaloid ‘taxine’. The seed is poisonous but not the red flesh of the Yew berry.

Flowers hang underneath the branches.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. In two flat rows along the branch, dark green, shiny above with noticeable midrib, underside light-green, 1-3.5 cm long, 2-3 mm wide.

Fruits Seeds

Berry: cup-shaped, bright red, fleshy, 8-12 mm wide; the seed is oval, initially green turning brown.

Medical

Leaves: the clippings from Yew hedges are collected between July – September; they are used in the process of making a chemotherapy drug to treat breast cancer.
