Description

A tuberous perennial having enlarged underground structures for storage of nutrients.

Grows in open, dry grassland where it is not inhibited by taller vegetation.

Flowers

This is the last flowering orchid of the season, fragrant, with a strong vanilla scent. The flowers are in one slender spiral spike. The outer two sepals are spread out, the upper sepal and the petals are fused together; the lip is vertical, green near the throat, no spur.

Leaves

Scales leaves resemble green scales e.g. Cupressus, Juniperus. Basal rosette, often withered by flowering time. Stem leaves are overlapping and scale-like.
