Description

A native to central and southern Europe, calcareous soil. Introduced into northern Europe and often used as an ornamental tree.

The crown is rounded to egg-shaped. The leaves turn yellow in autumn.

The berries stay on the tree till winter.

Flowers

Flowers are in stalked clusters, each cluster 5-7.5 cm.

Elliptic oval leaf. Oval, unevenly serrated, green above, white felted beneath.

Fruits Seeds

Drupe: outer fleshy parts surround a pit with a seed inside, first green, turning red in autumn.

Edible

Berries are floury and sour, but after the first frost, they become soft and sweeter. Can be used in jam or compote. A favourite with birds.
