A plant of damp forests, normally on fertile soil.

All parts of the plant are toxic. Although the glossy red berries look inviting, they taste very bitter; accidental poisoning rarely occurs.

Flowers

Flowers grow in loose clusters, with purple petals folded backwards; yellow stamens in the shape of a tight cone.

Leaves

Cordate heart-shaped. Heart-shaped, pointed, often lobed at the base, 4-12 cm long.

Fruits Seeds

Berry: egg-shaped, shiny, bright red.
