Description
Alexanders have been cultivated from the 1st century onwards. It has a solid, furrowed stem, hollow with age.
Damp places, often near the sea.
Flowers
The flowers are yellow-green in dense, rounded umbels of 7-15 rays.
Leaves
Trifoliate with three leaflets. Three oval-to-diamond shaped, serrated leaflets, shiny.
Fruits Seeds
Berry: black, stalked, in a round, open cluster.
Edible
Leaves, stem, shoots and upper root: best eaten blanched, having a flavour between celery and parsley.
Flower buds: in salads.
