Description
An evergreen, tough scrambling vine with thorny stems. Separate male and female plants.

Flowers greenish-white, very fragrant borne in clusters, followed by green, then bright red berries.

Cordate heart-shaped. Heart-shaped, pointed, spiny midrib and margins, leathery.

Berry: red, up to 30 or more in a cluster, 2-5 mm.

Young shoots: similar to asparagus
Medical
Roots: were used to treat rheumatism and skin disorders.
