Description
Formerly called Leontodon autumnalis. The yellow flowering plants in the Asteraceae family are often difficult to differentiate.
The stem of the Scorzoneroides autumnalis is unbranched or branched, has no leaves and is swollen towards the top with most of the scale-like bracts near the top.
Flowers
The flowers are borne at the end of the stem in loose clusters. The florets are 5-toothed at the tip. The outer florets are reddish beneath.
No chaffy scales among the florets.
Leaves
Spatulate broad end of the leaf tapers to the point of connection with the plant stem. Basal rosette with leaves tapering to base, elongated, deeply lobed or with large serrations, smooth or hairy with a pointed tip, 4-35 cm long.
Fruits Seeds
Achene: a cluster of 1-seeded fruit, with bristly hairs, each seed 5-7 mm long.
