Description

In appearance very much like Juncus, Rush family (Juncaceae), but this plant belongs to the Sedge family (Cyparaceae).

Grows in damp conditions, but can tolerate periods of drought.

The stalks are cylindrical, rigid and hairless, ending in a point just above the clusters of flowers.

Flowers

Flowers are one-sided, grouped together in stalked, rounded heads; pale when young, turning brownish-red in maturity.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Basal leaves few, strap-like.

Fruits Seeds

Caryopsis: a cluster of small, brown-black, 1-seeded fruit.
