Description

The leaves are broader than any other Willow. The flowers appear before the leaves.

Damp, swampy conditions.

Flowers

Male and female flowers (catkins) are on separate trees. The male catkins are round, grey, silky turning yellow; the female catkins are elongated in shape, curled.

Leaves

Elliptic oval leaf. Oval, alternate, serrated or entire, long stalked, 4-10 cm long, 5 cm wide.

Fruits Seeds

Capsule: long, in 2 parts, splitting open when ripe to reveal cotton-woolly fluffy seeds, to be dispersed by the wind.

Medical

Bark: willow bark has been used since the 1st century A.D. for pain relief and to lower fever. Willow yields salicylic acid, which was first synthesized in 1838 and provides the basis of aspirin.
