A lax, shrubby, evergreen herb. Dry, rocky, undisturbed habitats.

The sap can cause burning of the skin when the skin is exposed to sun. The essential oil is used in perfumery.

Flowers

The flowers have 4-5 bright yellow, glandular petals fringed with long hairs. The centre of the petals houses a raised capsule.

Leaves

Bipinnate leaflets on either side of the stem, each leaflet is further subdivided. Leaflets on either side of the stem, each leaflet is again divided, grey-green.

Fruits Seeds

Capsule: 4-5 pointed capsule.

Edible

Leaves: used to flavour Italian grappa.

Medical

Once used to cause abortion. Still used in herbal medicine for menstrual problems.
