Description
Dioecious – plants are either male or female. The juice can remove rust, mould and ink stains from linen.
Flowers
The female flowers are small, reddish-brown on slender loose spikes (40 cm); the male flowers are yellowish-green.
Leaves
Hastate spear-shaped leaf with horizontal lobes at base. Spear-shaped with lobes at the base, lower leaves with stalks, upper without, 14 cm.
Fruits Seeds
Achene: a string of small dry 1-seeded fruit. The seed is 3-edged, glossy and brown, surrounded by valves, 1.8-2.5 mm across.
Edible
Fresh young leaves: have an acidic taste used for culinary purposes, not recommended for those who suffer from rheumatism, arthritis, gout and kidney stones.
