Description

The common scrub oak of the Mediterranean, often smaller than 2 m. The acorns take 18 months to mature.

The female Kermes scale insect feeds on the sap of the Kermes oak producing a red dye which is the source of natural crimson. The words crimson and carmine derive from the word ‘kermes’.

Male flowers, catkins, smooth. Female flowers, solitary.

Leaves

Elliptic oval leaf. Oval, holly-like, spiny, pointed, leathery, dark green, 1-4 cm.

Fruits Seeds

Nut: Acorn, a hard shelled pod that contains the fruit and seed of the plant; it does not open to release seeds. The acorn cup has sharp hooked points. 1-3 cm.
