Description

Also known as Scabiosa rutifolia. A sturdy, erect, smooth to hairy plant, usually branched.

Found in very damp habitats.

Flowers

Flowers can be pink, yellow or white, round, with the outer florets slightly larger than the inner ones. The flower bracts are fused together half way up, then divide into 6-8 lobes.

Leaves

Pinnate row of leaflets on either side of the stem, Bipinnate leaflets on either side of the stem, each leaflet is further subdivided. Somewhat fleshy. Basal leaves: often entire and lobed. Upper leaves: rows of leaflets on either side of the stem or each leaflet further subdivided.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of small, dry, 1-seeded fruit. Each fruit with 5 bristles (awns).
