A rhizomatous perennial with alternate, simple leaves on arching stems, within each leaf axil one or two tubular, drooping, fragrant flowers.

A woodland plant on calcareous soil.

Flowers

The tubular flowers are fragrant, white tinged green and hang from the underside of the branches.

Leaves

Elliptic oval leaf. Oval, alternate on the stem, 5-15 cm long.

Fruits Seeds

Berry: round and black.

Rhizomes: once a treatment for bruises.
