The trunk, with its peeling bark, gives the tree its distinctive patchwork appearance.

The plane tree gives shade to many squares in Provence. Napoleon ordered plane trees to be planted to give his soldiers shade while marching; there are still many stretches of road in the Var with plane trees alongside.

Male and female flowers appear at the same time as the leaves. The reddish female flowers are borne in a round cluster, 1 cm. The male flowers fall after shedding their pollen.

Palmate leaf has lobes radiating from a base point. Long stalked, large with 3-5 lobes, rarely 7, central lobe as long as it is wide, 12-25 cm.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a round cluster of 1 seeded fruit, 2.5-4 cm.
