Description

A conifer native to the Mediterranean. The trunk has orange-red bark with deep fissures. The branches are not evenly balanced giving the tree an irregular appearance. The cones are much smaller then the cones of the other Mediterranean pines and take 24 months to mature.

The wood is used for timber, it is hard, dense and pliable.

Flowers

No true flowers, instead it produces male and female cones.

Leaves

Needle leaf is narrow, pointed, like a needle, e.g. Pinus. In pairs, 6-13 cm long, 1 mm wide.

Fruits Seeds

Cone: narrow, 6-10 cm long, 2-3 cm wide.

Edible

Resin: the Greek wine ‘retsina’ is flavoured with the resin of the Aleppo Pine.
