Description

‘Phlomis’ in Greek means flame, referring perhaps to the use of the leaves as lamp wicks.

Flowers

Flowers are borne in dense whorls along a straight stem, deep pink or purple with the upper lip hooded. The lower lip is 3-lobed, the middle lobe being the largest. Calyx hairy and toothed.

Leaves

Whorled cluster of leaves encircle the stem. Cluster of long, pointed to egg-shaped leaves surrounding the stem at the same height, serrated, wrinkled above, downy beneath.

Fruits Seeds

Nut: 1-4 small nuts, enclosed within the calyx.
