Description

A plant for wet places, damp grassland to woodland.

In Japan, cultivated Water Pepper is used as a vegetable. The wild Water Pepper is too pungent, it produces oils that cause skin irritation.

Flowers

The sepals and petals are united from the base to halfway, with white or pinkish margins and a green base, growing in a slender, curving spike.

Leaves

Lanceolate leaf is lance-shaped: long and widest in the middle. Long, pointed, narrow, alternate, almost stalkless. Margins with very short hairs.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of one-seeded fruit, deep brown, oval, flat, 3mm long.

Edible

Shoots, leaves and tips, having a pungent taste.
