Description

Originally from South America. Also known as Digitaria dilatata, belonging to the ‘finger grasses’.

Woody rhizome (4-8 mm) bearing thick roots that go 1 m deep.

Suitable for hay and silage.

Flowers

The inflorescence, hairy, is a branched spike comprising of 2-11 widely separated, drooping racemes of green spikelets, which turn brown when ripe.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Blade, flat, 3-20 mm wide, thickened along the margins, hairless.

Fruits Seeds

Caryopsis: a dry fruit (grain).
