Description

An unusual woodland plant, vertical, with large leaves in whorls around the stem. It prefers calcareous soils and grows in damp, shady, old established woods and stream banks.

The entire plant is poisonous.

Flowers

The flowers are borne above the final whorl, solitary, with very narrow greenish thread-like petals and petal-like sepals. The stamens are yellow, the pistil (female part) is purple.

Leaves

Whorled cluster of leaves encircle the stem. A cluster of dark green leaves arranged in opposing pairs at the same height.

Fruits Seeds

Berry: size of a blueberry, unpleasant taste.
