The Latin name is derived from ‘palea’ meaning chaff, referring to its chaffy receptacle, ‘spinosa’ means spiny, referring to the spiny bracts surrounding the flower.

Woody at the base. The soft, hairy lateral branches are longer than the central one.

Flowers

The flowerheads have short, yellow ray florets and deep yellow disk florets, surrounded by 5-8 spine-tipped bracts, longer than the ray florets.

Leaves

Lanceolate leaf is lance-shaped: long and widest in the middle. Long, wider in the middle, pointed, basal leaves with stalks.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of 1-seeded fruit with silky hairs.
