A hairy, erect perennial. The name comes from the Greek word ‘origanon’, or bitter herb. There are more than 36 species in this genus.

The hotter the climate, the more pungent is this herb.

Flowers are pink with protruding stamens and purple bracts, borne in rounded clusters.
