Description

Cactus is native to the Americas, introduced into the Mediterranean region by Spanish colonists. It is an invasive plant. Prickly Pears have flat, rounded pads that are covered in spines, both large and small. When touched, the small hairy spines detach themselves and penetrate the skin.

Flowers

Bright yellow overlapping petals, with pale yellow filaments.

Leaves

Cladode flower grows from a leaf-like stem. Rounded pads, in which the photosynthesis takes place.

Fruits Seeds

Berry: enclosing seeds, spiny, to 9 cm.

Edible

Fruits: eaten all around the Mediterranean. Before eating, the skin and spines have to be removed.
