Description

The Onopordums are the tallest of all thistles, very solid and spiny, covered in white hairs. Generally found in open, grassy spaces.

Flowers

The flowerheads are purple, 60 mm or more. The flower-bracts, 50-70 mm, have recurved outer and middle bracts.

Leaves

Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib. Oblong, spiny, triangular, wedge-shaped lobes almost to central midrib, without stalks, 15 cm.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of fleshy 1-seeded fruit.
