Description

A woodland orchid, parasitic on the roots of trees. It has no chlorophyll (green pigment), that is, it is unable to make food from sunlight and is entirely dependent for nutrients by germinating and growing on the mycorrhiza fungus in the soil.

It appears similar to Orobanche, but Bird’s-nest Orchid has 6 petals, whereas Orobanche has 5.

Flowers

Flowers numerous, yellowish-brown, fragrant, in a spike. Sepals and petals are similar. The lip is deeply divided at the tip and spreading outwards, no spurs.

Leaves

Scales leaves resemble green scales e.g. Cupressus, Juniperus. Scale-like, overlapping.

Fruits Seeds

Capsule: egg-shaped.
