Description

A bulb with one short stem surrounded by fleshy leaves or leaf bases. Cutting across the bulb reveals the layers or rings. The leaves (3-6) arise from the base.

Flowers

The flower stalk is made up of densely packed, blue-black, urn-shaped flowers. A ring of white teeth surround the entry into the flower. The uppermost flowers are lighter in colour and sterile.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Blade, 3-6 with central groove, bright green.

Fruits Seeds

Capsule: first green, brown when ripe.

Bulbs: in parts of the Mediterranean the bulbs are collected and eaten.
