Originally from northern India and China, introduced and naturalised in southern Europe. Planted as an ornamental in streets and gardens.

The hard seeds have been used to make beads and rosaries.


The flowers are star-shaped, lilac in colour and fragrant, borne in broad panicles.

Drupe: outer fleshy parts surround a shell with a seed inside, yellow when ripe, remaining on the tree through winter, becoming faded and wrinkled, 15-18 mm.
