Description

Originally from northern India and China, introduced and naturalised in southern Europe. Planted as an ornamental in streets and gardens.

The hard seeds have been used to make beads and rosaries.

Flowers

The flowers are star-shaped, lilac in colour and fragrant, borne in broad panicles.

Leaves

Pinnate row of leaflets on either side of the stem. Row of stalked, oval and pointed leaflets on either side of the stem.

Fruits Seeds

Drupe: outer fleshy parts surround a shell with a seed inside, yellow when ripe, remaining on the tree through winter, becoming whitish-grey and wrinkled, 15-18 mm.
