Description

Also known under the name Scabiosa stellata. A native to southwestern Europe.

The name Scabiosa is derived from the latin word ‘Scabere’ which means to scratch.

Flowers

The flowers are pinkish-lilac with outer florets being larger than the inner ones.

Leaves

Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib, Lobed leaf shaped with indents and protrusions. Basal leaves lobed and serrated, upper leaves deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: in a cone shape with papery bracts. In the centre a stretched star, a leftover from the bloom.

Medical

Root: in medieval times extracts of the root were used to relieve the itching of scabies or other skin afflictions.
