Description

A very common grass. In May and early June the flower spike is covered with white flowers.

Very variable habitat, roadsides, footpaths, wasteland, river banks and sand dunes.

Flowers

There are 4-14 flowers in dense spikelets, arranged alternately on the stem, giving the stem a wavy appearance.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass {end-tooltip}. Tussock-forming with smooth stems.

Fruits Seeds

Caryopsis: a dry fruit (grain).

Edible

The seeds are edible and have the same nutritional value as oats, but are awkward to harvest, being quite small.
