Description

Lavandula stoechas flowers in spring and unlike Lavandula angustifolia or Lavandula latifolia, it grows in acid soil. A popular garden plant.

Flowers

The flower spike resembles a miniature square pineapple with rows of purple black flowers topped by showy colourful bracts. The bracts attract the insects and guide them towards the real flowers, the tiny purple flowers along the spike.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Narrow, grey-green, margins rolled up.

Fruits Seeds

Nut: small, brown, enclosed in the calyx.

Medical

Essential oil: fragrance is closer to Rosemary than to Lavender. It is toxic, used diluted for chronic sinusitis, bronchitis and upper respiratory infections. It has antiseptic properties.
