Description

A plant that generally grows at higher altitudes on calcareous, rocky soil in dappled shade, very sturdy.

Flowers

Each flowerhead carrying between 30-50 umbels.

Leaves

Pinnate row of leaflets on either side of the stem. Rows of oblong, lobed, wedge-shaped leaflets on either side of the stem. Large, shiny, foliage at the base, becoming smaller and stalkless towards the top.

Fruits Seeds

Schizocarp: oblong, a dry fruit winged all around, that splits into single seeded parts when ripe.

Edible

The Romans reputedly mixed the roots with cumin to season preserved artichokes.
