Description

One of the most common deadnettles. The stems are soft and hairy.

A plant of cultivated land, fallow fields, vineyards, olive groves and waste places.

Flowers

The 2-lipped flowers are pinkish-purple borne on a long straight tube. They are grouped in whorls at the base of the leaves. The lower lip is purple spotted, the hooded upper lip is covered in pinkish-purple spiky hairs.

Leaves

Whorled cluster of leaves encircle the stem. Cluster of leaves circling the stem at the same height, round to oval, lobed or serrated.
Upper leaves clasp the stem.
Lower leaves with stalks.

Fruits Seeds

Nut: small enclosed within the calyx.

Edible

Leaves: gathered before flowering, too hairy to use in salads, best cooked.
