Description

In the first year the plant forms a rosette, in the second year the stem emerges. It is quite striking as parts of the stem are straw-coloured and parts are covered by the basal lobes, giving the stem a striped effect.

Usually found in hedgerows, sometimes in old walls.

Flowers

The flowers are borne all along the stem, the petals are serrated at the tip.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass, Hastate spear-shaped leaf with horizontal lobes at base. Basal leaves: linear, lobed and slightly serrated.
Upper leaves: two basal lobes (hastate) that extend down the stem.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a small, 1-seeded round fruit with feathery hairs.

Edible

Leaves: gathered in spring or autumn for salad.
