The word ‘lactuca’ comes from Latin, lac meaning milk, referring to the milky liquid inside the plant.

Grows in rocky, forested areas.

Flowers

The flower stalk can be as long as 1.5 m, but carries only 4-5 flowers.

Leaves

Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib. Triangular lobes almost to central midrib, hairless, green above, grey-green below.

Achene: a cluster of elliptic, veined, almost black, 1-seeded fruit with hairs.

Edible

Leaves: when young, become bitter on maturing.
