Description
A dense evergreen conifer. The tree is dioecious (male and female on different plants).
Pine forests, rocky areas on calcareous soils.
Flowers
The male part is catkin-like, yellow and falls off soon after pollination, female cone is green turning blue-black as it matures. It takes 2 years for the cone to ripen.
Leaves
Needle leaf is narrow, pointed, like a needle, e.g. Pinus. In whorls of three, pointed and with 1 central white stripe, 11-18 mm.
Fruits Seeds
Cone: berry-like with fleshy scales, turning from green to blue-black.
Edible
Berries: are used to flavour meat, gin, sauerkraut, vegetables and liqueurs.
Medical
Berries: used as an urinary antiseptic, specifically for cystitis or to increase gastric secretions and improve the appetite.
