Description
Very variable, with a number of ‘species’ in different parts of the Mediterranean. A rhizomatous perennial.
Dry, rocky places.
Iris germanica subsp. florentina has pure white flowers, occasionally with a slight hint of blue or lilac and a pale yellow beard. It has been grown commercially (perfume industry) in France and Italy for its violet scent which is derived from the rhizomes.
Flowers
Fragrant. Flowers violet-blue with the standard (upright part) somewhat lighter in colour; the falls have a yellow beard along the centre. The spathe is green in the lower half with papery membranes above.
Leaves
Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Sword-shaped, 2-4.5 cm wide.
Fruits Seeds
Pod: containing seeds.
Medical
Roots: fresh root of Iris Germanica is a powerful purgative and was used to treat dropsy.
