Description

The name Stinking Iris refers to the odour released when rubbing the leaves. It is a beardless Iris. Grows in moist soil in open forest.

A rhizomatous perennial.

Flowers

The flowers are a dull purplish colour flecked with yellow, followed by very colourful seed capsules that remain on the plant till spring.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass. Sword shaped leaves, 5-8 cm long.

Fruits Seeds

Pod: splits open to reveal orange-red berry-like seeds.

Medical

Root: macerated fresh root in ale was used as a laxative.
