Description

The stems have short, scale-like bracts, slightly swollen under the calyx (base of the flower).

Flowers

Cat’s-ears flowers, solitary, have chaffy scales between the yellow ray florets on leafless stems.

Leaves

Spatulate broad end of the leaf tapers to the point of connection with the plant stem. Rosette of elongated leaves, broad end tapers to the base, widely spaced, serrated or lobed, roughly hairy, to 20 cm.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of 1-seeded fruit with mostly beaked hairs.

Edible

Young leaves: in a mixed salad, quite bland in taste.
Roots: roasted as a coffee substitute.
