Description
There are many species in the Cat’s-ear family. In early spring in Provence, fields, grass verges and ground between the vines are covered in yellow flowers.
One of the first flowers to appear is the small Hypochaeris achyrophorus. It is a hairy, low to short annual. The bracts are long and linear, covered in short silky hairs.
Flowers
The flowers have golden yellow ray florets, initially solitary on leafless stems, branching as the plant matures.
Leaves
Spatulate broad end of the leaf tapers to the point of connection with the plant stem. Basal rosette, broad at the tip, tapered at the base, with or without lobes, very variable.
Fruits Seeds
Achene: a cluster of 1-seeded fruit with beaked hairs, 5-7 mm.
Edible
Leaves: as part of a wild spring salad.
