Description
The male and female hops grow on separate plants.
Hops added to beer preserves the beer.
Semi-shade or sun, dry or moist soil, can tolerate drought.
Flowers
Male flowers are small, yellowish-green catkins; female flowers are white and spiky, then becoming pale yellow and cone-like.
Leaves
Palmate leaf has lobes radiating from a base point. Mature leaves with 3, 5 or 7 lobes, serrated, opposite on the stems.
Fruits Seeds
Strobulus: a seed cone, 20 mm.
Edible
Young shoots and male flowers: in salads.
Medical
Dried strobulus: used as a sedative to treat insomnia and restlessness.
