Description

The Greek word ‘Alypon’ means to relieve pain, referring to its former usage.

The leaves produce a yellow dye.

Dry rocky and bushy habitats.

Flowers

The flowers are packed into a dense, rounded, blue-lilac head, with a darker circle in the middle. The flowerhead is surrounded by a frilled collar of bracts.

Spatulate broad end of the leaf tapers to the point of connection with the plant stem. Broad end tapers to base, alternate on the stems, leathery, short-stalked.

Achene: a dry fruit inside the base of the flower (calyx).
