Description

The square stems, the leaves and fruits all have small hooked bristles that attach themselves to clothing and to coats of animals.

Hedgerows, field margins, waste areas, pastures and open woodland.

Flowers

A cluster of 2-7, tiny, white, 4-petalled flowers.

Leaves

Whorled cluster of leaves encircle the stem. Cluster of 6-9 leaflets, oval in shape, circling the stem at the same height.

Fruits Seeds

Schizocarp: a dry fruit, bristly, that splits open into single seeded parts when ripe.

Edible

Leaves and stalks: stringy.
Fruit: dried and roasted can be used as a coffee substitute.

Leaves and stalks: with cleansing and diuretic properties.
