Description

Before the commercial Fragaria vesca was developed at the beginning of the 16th century, Fragaria vescas were gathered from the wild.

Shady, fairly damp places in woodland.

‘Fragar’, Latin for fragrance, of flowers and fruit. Woody root stock with long rooting runners. Small white or red fruit.

The flowers are 5-petalled, 3-10 on long stems.

Elliptic oval leaf. Leaflets oval, serrated, silky, green above, pale beneath, 1-6 cm.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a fleshy fruit with many one-seeded achenes (the tiny pips in the strawberry) produced by one single flower.

Fruit.

Medical

Leaves and roots: to treat diarrhoea.
Fruit: as a laxative.
