Description

Ficus carica flourishes near rivers or streams; when there is no water available it sends out roots to the nearest water source.

Flowers

The flowers are very small, hidden inside a small green structure called a ‘syncap’, which has a tiny opening to the outside for pollinating wasps to enter.

Leaves

Palmate leaf has lobes radiating from a base point. Large lobes radiate from a base point, rough to the touch.

Fruits Seeds

Syconium: formed by an enlarged, fleshy hollow receptacle, 3-7 cm long.

Fruit: used in many culinary dishes.

Medical

Sap: to treat warts and corns.
Fruit: dried figs are rich in calcium, iron, potassium and vitamin PP (Niacin). A mild laxative.
Leaves: to treat haemorrhoids.
