Description

Euphorbias have a particular flowering structure called a ‘cyathia’. The Euphorbia characias is a common plant in the Var. The long, stout, upright stems are bare below and leafy above.

Rocky habitats, scrub, garrigue and open woodland.

The latex of all Euphorbias can cause a skin rash.

Flowers

Cyathia: rounded to oblong head with umbels of 10-20 rays. The bracts form a fused ‘cup’ around the flowers. The flowers are surrounded by a ring of dark, reddish-brown nectar glands.

Leaves

Linear narrow blade leaf, like grass, Lanceolate leaf is lance-shaped: long and widest in the middle. Narrow, wider in the middle, pointed, bluish-green, alternate on the stems.

Fruits Seeds

Capsule: 4-7 mm.
