Description

A striking, prickly, low-growing plant with its round, steel-blue flower-heads in summer. Bristly silvery bracts, longer than the actual flower, surround the flower head.

Dry, grassy and waste areas.

Flowers

The tubular flowers turn from silvery to steel-blue.

Leaves

Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib. Deeply lobed, lobes almost to central midrib, elliptical in shape, tips of lobes with spines, recurved margins.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of 1-seeded fruit with prickly hairs.
