Description

Deciduous, the buds, leafstalks, leaves and fruit are covered with fine, soft hairs. The ripe fruit, resembling a pear, is yellowish-green in colour.

It prefers moist conditions, tolerates acid, neutral or alkaline soils and can grow in shade, semi-shade or sun.

Flowers

Delicate, light-pink flowers, 5-petalled, appear after the leaves.

Leaves

Ovate leaf is egg-shaped, wider at base, Elliptic oval leaf. Egg-shaped to oval, alternate on the branches, 5-10 cm long, 3-5 cm wide.

Fruits Seeds

Pome: a fleshy, enlarged receptacle with a tough central core containing seeds.

Fruit: used in many culinary dishes.

Fruit: astringent properties, the juice is used to treat gastro-intestinal disorders and diarrhoea.
