Description

A more thorny shrub than Crataegus azarolus.

Hedges, scrub, woodland margins.

Flowers

Racemes of white, fragrant flowers with 1 style, producing 1 seed. Closely related to Crataegus laevigata with 2 or 3 styles producing 2 or 3 seeds. Both plants have similar medicinal properties.

Leaves

Pinnately lobed leaf with lobes both sides of a central midrib. 3-5 deeply cut lobes, each lobe serrated at the tip, 3-7 cm long.

Fruits Seeds

Drupe: dark or bright red, normally with 1 seed, 1 cm, having an outer fleshy part surrounding a pit with a seed inside.

Medical

Flowers: a tonic for the heart, regulates heartbeat, helps high blood pressure and has a calming and sedative effect.
